A matching reference number narrows the search. Voltage, power, rotation, tooth count, mounting and terminals still need comparison.

What is a starter motor cross-reference?

A starter motor cross-reference connects two or more part numbers that may describe comparable units. The numbers can come from an equipment manufacturer, engine manufacturer, starter manufacturer, rebuilder or aftermarket catalogue. A cross-reference is useful for narrowing a search, but it is not an automatic fitment guarantee.

Production changes, regional specifications and superseded numbers can create differences within the same equipment family. Treat the number as the first checkpoint and compare the existing unit before ordering.

Record every readable number

Photograph the data plate and record the complete number, including prefixes, suffixes and separators. Avoid dropping a final letter or assuming two similar-looking digits are interchangeable. When a label is damaged, provide clear photos of the housing, mounting flange, pinion and terminals.

Compare the specification in a fixed order

  • System voltage: normally 12V or 24V for the applications represented on this site.
  • Rated power: compare the kW rating when it is available.
  • Rotation and pinion: confirm rotation direction and tooth count from reliable information.
  • Mounting: compare flange shape, hole count, spacing and nose length.
  • Electrical connections: compare solenoid position, terminal type and cable clearance.
